Indigenous and
Decolonial Evaluation

Indigenous evaluation is a culturally rooted and responsive approach that centers Indigenous perspectives, knowledge systems, and self-determination. It prioritizes community-determined and community-led reflection and assessment methods that respect Indigenous worldviews, involve Indigenous people directly in all stages, and examine outcomes wholistically—considering spiritual, emotional, social, and cultural dimensions beyond externally imposed metrics. By integrating Indigenous ways of knowing at the outset with knowledge gathering and generation practices, this approach ensures evaluations are meaningful, empowering, and reflective of the community's own definitions of success and progress.

Frequently Asked Questions

Feel free to contact me if you have any other questions.

  • Evaluation is a process of learning, reflection, and accountability that helps us understand the meaning, impact, and effectiveness of a program, initiative, or system. It goes beyond measuring outcomes—it asks deeper questions about relationships, values, and how knowledge and evidence is created and shared.

We approach evaluation as a relational and story-driven practice. Grounded in Indigenous methodologies, we see evaluation as an opportunity to listen to the wisdom of communities, honor lived experiences, and support transformative change. Our work is guided by reciprocity, relational accountability, and respect for diverse ways of knowing.

Rather than relying solely on Western metrics, we engage in participatory and arts-based methods, sensemaking, and storytelling to center the voices of those most impacted. Our evaluations help organizations and communities see not just what is working, but why it matters, how it aligns with cultural values, and what shifts are needed for long-term wellbeing and systemic change.

In short, evaluation is not just about measuring—it’s about meaning-making, learning, and growing together in ways that honor both people and place.

  • Indigenous evaluation centers Indigenous knowledge systems. It embodies relational accountability, respect, and reciprocity and prioritizes community voices and emphasizes storytelling and holistic approaches. In practice, it begins with and is rooted upon the worldviews, values, and practices of a specific Indigenous Nation. This includes collaborative processes, attention to cultural protocols, and a commitment to co-creating meaningful outcomes that align with community values and visions.

  • Using a decolonizing approach means challenging and transforming colonial frameworks and power dynamics in evaluation. This means we start by identifying and disrupting “the ways things have always been done” within institutions and systems. It includes attention to resources, voice, policies, and human-centric paradigms. It involves centering Indigenous ways of knowing, deep listening, humility, honoring community-defined priorities, and ensuring that the process and outcomes contribute to self-determination, equity, and justice. It’s about creating space for transformative change that respects and uplifts diverse perspectives and relationships.

  • Decolonizing evaluation work can be done by anyone committed to learning, unlearning, and working in respectful relationships with Indigenous communities. It requires humility, a willingness to disrupt colonial narratives, and alignment with the principles of relational accountability and reciprocity. For non-Indigenous practitioners in Indigenous spaces, it’s essential that this work is not led by you - but is supported through the gifts that you are invited to bring. This requires that you partner with and take guidance from Indigenous people, knowledge holders, and communities who are resourced to lead this work. Decolonizing evaluation must disrupt power, resources, structures, and policies that have built and maintained Euro Western institutions.
